About Industrial Training

Why do Industrial Training?

Engineering experience during vacation work (as required for MMAN4000 Professional Engineering) is a valuable part in the training of a professional engineer.  It is also a requirement for recognition by professional societies such as Engineers, Australia.

When to do Industrial Training

Each student must complete a minimum of 60 days industrial work before graduation.  Normally this would be done in the vacations between years 2 and 3 and years 3 and 4 but can be done at the end of year 4 also. Students who wish to complete Industrial Training after they have completed all courses except MMAN4000 should note that it will affect the time of their graduation. Marking and processing results in time for graduation will take between three and six months. Seek the advice of the Industrial Training Coordinator if you have any doubts.

Industrial Training Report

A report detailing the experience gained during Industrial Training periods is to be submitted for assessment after completion of at least 60 days industrial work.  The report may be on a combination of all the workplaces or on just one, provided that the report covers the major part of the total time of the industrial training. The report will be graded for School purposes and to provide feedback to the author. However, even though Industrial Training is a requirement for completion of the course (MMAN4000) it does not contribute to the final result.

Reports will be graded on:

  1. Presentation (30%)
General selection and logical arrangement of material, spelling, English expression, effective use of illustrations, neat handling of material in Appendices.
  2. Content and Quality (50%)
Evidence of skill and thought in fact collecting and observation with critical analysis. Discussion of pertinent issues leading to reasoned conclusions. Calibre of tasks undertaken and successfully concluded. Discussion of benefits obtained from training. It MUST detail your experiences and what was done during the period.
  3. Originality and Initiative (20%)
Skill in exploiting work situations that are not ideal for maximum benefit in training. Fresh approaches to accepted situations and success in following lines of original inquiry.

Preparation of Industrial Training Report will aid with the preparation of the report.

Endorsement of Reports

The employer must approve the report prior to submission and formally endorse the report as an accurate record of your employment on the title page.  If more than one company is involved the report may be divided into sections representing each company and endorsed accordingly.

Record of Industrial Training (Green Form)

The Record of Industrial Training form (also available from the General Office) is to be completed by both student and employer for each of the industrial training periods and submitted with the report.  Please staple this form securely inside the cover of the report but do NOT bind it into the report.

Retain a photocopy of this form for your own record as it may be useful in future job applications as a statement of the employment period and a reference from the employer.
