General Education

UNSW Requirements

The UNSW requirements for general education courses were broadened in 2009, and the current requirements are given at www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/generaleducation/2009/generaleducation2.html.

MME Requirements

To meet the General Education requirement (12 UoC for a single degree, or 6 UoC for a concurrent degree, e.g. BE/MBiomedE), students in the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering may:

  1. use any GEN* course provided by another faculty (i.e. any GEN* course except GENE); or
  2. substitute any course provided by another faculty, provided that the prerequisites for that course have been met and that the course is not similar to a course which is core to the program in which the student is enrolled; or
  3. use the Faculty of Engineering course ENGG0360 Communicating in Engineering and Science.

Students enrolled in combined undergraduate programs leading to the award of two degrees, each in a different faculty (e.g. BE/BA, BE/BSc, BE/BCom or BE/LLB), automatically meet the General Education requirements.

Exclusions for MME

Students enrolled in degrees in the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering may not use as General Education electives, or substitutes, any courses provided by the Faculty of Engineering (except ENGG0360 Communicating in Engineering and Science), or any of the Flexible Year 1 Electives provided by any faculty.

The following table is a guide for courses which are specifically excluded from meeting the General Education requirements for degrees in this School. If you are not sure about whether a particular course is acceptable as meeting the General Education requirements, then you must check with the School Office before you enrol to ensure that you will receive credit when completed.
