Entry Requirements for Postgraduate Research Students

Entry requirements for the two research degrees are listed below. A research proposal of approximately 100 words should accompany each application.

For both research Masters and Doctoral programs it is highly desirable that the research proposal emerge as the result of a process of consultation between the candidate and potential supervisor. Before lodgement of an application form, the candidate should have started dialogue with a potential supervisor.

In theory, a research program can be commenced at any time during the academic year. However, the tuition fee is charged on a semester basis irrespective of when studies are commenced.

There is an English Language Requirement for graduates of universities where the language of instruction is not English. English is the language required by the University for PhD and ME theses. Applicants whose first language is not English, or who have not undertaken a previous degree where English is the primary language of instruction within the last two years, are required to provide proof of their competence. Regardless of this, it should be noted that the Australian Government has special requirements for documentation of English language proficiency for applicants from certain countries (Assessment Levels 3 and 4) to obtain a student visa. Refer to the Australian Government website Student Visa Assessment Levels for further information regarding Assessment Levels.

Please refer to the English Requirements Policy for a list of Accepted English Language tests, together with their minimum results needed for admission. The English Support Unit of the UNSW Institute of Languages offers a number of courses to assist and improve written and oral English.  If you are in doubt whether or not your English needs improving, please consult with your supervisor, who will advise you.
