Postgraduate Research Students
The School provides a variety of opportunities for research study leading to the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Engineering (ME). These are for graduates who wish to pursue an academic or an engineering research career or enhance their career prospects.
The five undergraduate degree programs offered by the School result in it having a staff with the following diverse expertise and research interests:
- Aerospace Engineering — design, manufacture, and operation of aircraft and spacecraft.
- Applied Mechanics — engineering mechanics including mechanics of solids, dynamics, vibration and acoustics.
- Design — conceptual design, machine systems design, optimisation and failure analysis.
- Fluid and Thermal Engineering — energy utilisation and power generation, refrigeration and air conditioning, gas and liquid handling.
- Industrial Management, Computer Integrated Manufacturing — economic analysis, production planning and control, product and process design, total quality management and manufacturing strategy.
- Manufacturing processes — metal cutting, nano/micro-machining, ductile
regime machining, abrasive waterjet cutting, abrasive waterjet micro-machining, abrasive air-jet micro-machining, ice-jet processing, laser
cutting.
- Mechatronic Engineering — application of electronics to the monitoring and control of mechanical systems.
- Naval Architecture — analysis and design of marine vehicles such as ferries, catamarans, yachts and ships.
All academic staff members have time allocated to them to undertake research. They often undertake research in collaboration with research students they are supervising. Such research usually does not involve special funds for equipment or for the support of research students. However, academic staff may secure funds from various sources, such as grants from external bodies such as the Australian Research Council, for equipment or the support of research students and other (e.g. postdoctoral) staff who are only involved in research.
Excellent computer, laboratory and workshop facilities and a highly competent group of academic and support staff ensure that a professionally rewarding course of study can be followed.
